The proposal is that anyone convicted of 10 or more charges should be locked up for life.

Thursday will mark two weeks since the brutal stabbing of 15-year-old Khyler Edman inside his Port Charlotte home. There are still no formal murder charges against the main suspect, 27-year-old Ryan Cole, a habitual offender who's been in-and-out of jail more than 20 times.

Now, a man close to Khyler is fighting to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

In front of state legislators Tuesday, Kolanda pushed for "Khyler's Law."

The proposal is that anyone convicted of 10 or more charges should be locked up for life.

State senators chose not to comment on the proposal, saying without formal murder charges, a comment could compromise the state's investigation.

"It is frustrating, but I'll do what I have to do to get a bill through to Tallahassee," Kolanda said.

The deadline to file a bill for the legislative session is November 15. Kolanda said if he misses next month's deadline, he'll be ready for the following session.
